The Power of WHY

see the light.PNGWho? What? Where?

Those words are generally followed by a question. Some of the toughest questions are asked by children, for example: What happens to us when we die? Where do babies come from? Who is God? We have to become creative and conjure up satisfying answers that would satiate their curiosity.

  • WHY? Because children are tenacious and will continue asking questions until they’re gratified.
  • WHY? Because they are trying to make sense of the world around them.
  • WHY? Because as humans it is in our DNA to ask questions to understand the world around us.

The power in the word WHY is what compels us to keep seeking answers, to drill down through many layers of complexities, mystique, and societal expectations to what we consider truth to quell our human thirst of knowledge and hunger for profound universal understanding. Studies show children under the age of 11 ask ‘Why?’ an average of eight (8) times a day – with questions that leave many parents stumped! 48% percent of parents surveyed said they took the time to look up the answers with their child and 25% percent said they were creative with the truth.

Children on average ask between 200-300 questions per day. Adults average around 100 or less. And they usually stop asking the challenging questions that start with ‘WHY’.

Why is it important to ask WHY? The definition of why is to provide you with the cause or purpose of something.

  • Am I existing or am I living?
  • What do I want most out of this life?
  • What impact do we want to leave upon the world?

After you answer these thought provoking questions, then ask yourself ‘WHY’. Those answers will show you who you really are. When you show your WHY, you are sharing your dreams, aspirations, motivations, and core values. It is like holding a mirror up to your sub-conscious.

Knowing your WHY is an important first step in figuring out how to achieve the goals that excite you and create a life that you enjoy living. Let’s take for example the experience of Tom Hale, whose company BACKROADS will top $100 million in 2016. “My passion for bringing active travel experience to more people has driven me over the last 35 years.” He goes on to relate how he put enormous effort into the company for little return in the first seven years. He knew it would take time to make the money grow, he said, “It was never driven by the money. Once I got clear that this was my life’s work, doing something else was never an option.” The result is Tom found his WHY and made a small start up grow into a major player in the travel industry.

So, take the time to meditate on the following questions:

  • What makes you come alive?
  • What are your innate strengths?
  • Where do you find the greatest value?

If you keep a child-like curiosity, never stop questioning the universe and yourself, and seek to find your purpose – then you can SHOW THE WORLD YOUR WHY or your purpose and in doing so, lead a happy and fulfilling life.
